MY TOP 5 MMORPGS

If you know me at all you would know that hands down my favorite type of games are MMORPGs. I don't know what it is about those kind of games that just draw me in and completely captivate me. I could spend hours, grinding, improving my gear, doing quests and making new online friends. It basically teleports me to a new world!

Before we get into my favorite ones, let's first define MMORPG. MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game and the name speaks for itself. Basically, you choose a character and take part in quests and activities with other players in an online virtual world.

I started my MMORPG journey years ago and my likes and tastes have evolved over the years and you will see that as you browse through my favorites list. So let's get started!

1. RUNESCAPE

Oh Runescape, my first MMORPG and the one that will always hold a special place in my heart. When I started playing this game, I really had no idea what I was doing. It was summer, I had 2 months free and nothing to do. One day my friend suggested that I start playing. I thought, fair enough, I'll give it a go and back then it was just a browser game so no downloads, even better. Little did I know that I would be hooked.

Runescape is a F2P (free to play) with a P2P (pay to play) option. The game allows you to choose whether you want to focus on travelling through different areas while defeating monsters and completing quests or if you want to place more focus on leveling your character's skills. One of the lovely things about the game is the number of skills that you can spend countless hours leveling up. Skills include cooking, fishing, mining etc. The game also includes dungeons, trade, chat and pvp (player vs. player) amongst the combat classes (warrior, ranger, mage). If you are new to the MMORPG world and you're looking for a game to tryout, I highly recommend Runescape.

2. PERFECT WORLD INTERNATIONAL (PWI)

After completing all the free quests in Runescape and being a broke teen, I thought that it was time to find a new a game to play. I had been seeing ads for an MMORPG called Perfect World. I watched some videos on YouTube and thought it looked promising. Downloaded it and there went another summer.

Perfect World like Runescape was F2P with a P2P option. PW introduced me to a more in depth type of MMORPG, with so many races to choose from like human, winged elves, tideborn and a variety of classes like mystic, assassin, cleric, stormbringer etc. The game follows a story line that requires you to complete quests in order to advance and receive various rewards. There are both PVP and PVE servers and super fun dungeons and special activities. One of the unique features of PW is the territory wars where factions partake in a PVP battle in order to conquer certain areas of the map. It was one way to ensure that the game kept their players interested and dedicated, so dedicated I remember one faction requesting potential members to fill out an application form!(yeah I remember you QQmoar).

Oh did I mention that you can get married in the game and have a wedding and marriage quests? Lately it is not as popular as it used to be and that could be due to the gold prices in certain servers but it still manages to have it's fair share of dedicated players.

3. THE EXILED REALM OF ARBOREA (TERA)

After becoming too poor for Perfect World, I wanted to try a new MMORPG. After a brief search, I decided to try TERA. Although TERA possessed some similarities to PW, it also had many unique features that kept me hooked and led me to make 3 accounts! TERA has a wide range of unique races (elin, popori, castanic etc.) and classes ( gunner, ninja, lancer etc.) and a very nice initial character customization, you can even choose the way they cheer and shout in the game!

One thing that stood out to me in TERA was the targeting mechanism. The fact that you have to aim your skills or lock on certain skills on enemies and allies makes the game a little more difficult but definitely more interesting. The game also possesses various escape and dodge abilities which are necessary for survival when in combat or doing dungeons. The game really encourages lots of teamwork and communication which makes it so enjoyable. Another lovely thing about TERA is the many side activities that you can do, for example Corsair's Stronghold which is a 20v20 destroy the crystal event or the Kumas event or my favorite, the annual snowball fight. I think TERA is a great game to get into if you're looking for a good grind, lots of main and side quests and a little difficulty when it comes to dungeons.

4. BLADE AND SOUL

Blade and Soul has to be one of the games that I was most excited for, so excited that I paid in order to play a few days earlier. I usually play a healer class and to my surprise, this game has no pure healer so I was torn as to what I was going to do but when in doubt, go mage! The game is extremely customizable and has one of the most interesting and captivating story lines. Races include Gon, Jin,Yun and Lyn and classes range from blade dancer to force master, summoner etc.

An interesting feature of this game is the near death or downed feature, which gives your character a time limit to crawl away to safety and restore chi or signal for help. Another awesome feature of the game is the duel which includes 1v1 and 3v3 duels. These duels even have an annual world championship tournament where the best of the best can be seen. The game is a definite must play, with beautiful graphics and sceneries, excellent game play and never ending fun.

5. WORLD OF WARCRAFT (WOW)

What kind of post would this be if I didn't talk about the one and only World of Warcraft. It is probably the most well-known and highest grossing MMORPG, with countless mentions in TV series, commercials, famous memes (yes LEEROY JENKINS!) and even it's own movie!

The game is F2P until level 20 but generally players pay some sort of subscription fee. The game is constantly expanding and manages to keep their players for years, something that a lot of other MMORPGs are often unable to do. In the game you create your avatar and you can choose one of two modes, Normal, where you would be completing quests, partaking in PVP or Role Playing which as the name states, focuses a lot on the role playing aspect of the game. Like many other MMORPGs, WoW has factions, professions related to production or gathering and the typical completing quests for goals and rewards. It is impossible to not acknowledge the importance of WoW in the MMORPG world. If you are a looking for a well-loved, forever expanding and engaging MMO, this is the one for you!
