20 FUNNY THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN YOU START LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE

So I've decided to once again put myself through the wonderful roller-coaster that is learning a new language. For the past few months, I've been self studying French (some months more diligently than others 😅) and I'm starting to realize a pattern when it comes to the second language learning process. The same things that happened to me when I started to learn Spanish are once again happening to me with French ( or may be even worse!) So....I decided to write about it here so we could all have a great laugh. Hope you guys enjoy this one and to all my language learners -:

1.YOU START OFF REALLY MOTIVATED AND THEN JUST KINDA SORTA FORGET IT

Sometimes language learning and New Year's Resolutions are one in the same...oops....

2. YOU BECOME EXTREMELY SHY AND NERVOUS WHEN SPEAKING TO NATIVES

3. BUT SOMEHOW ALCOHOL = CONFIDENCE = "FLUENCY"

4. YOU START GOING ON LANGUAGE EXCHANGES BUT THEN REALIZE THAT SOME PEOPLE USE THAT AS AN EXCUSE TO FLIRT AND HOOK UP

5. YOU START USING MULTIPLE LANGUAGE LEARNING APPS ALL AT ONCE

6. SUBTITLES BECOME YOUR BEST FRIEND.

"I can only watch things in original version and subbed, I just can't do dubbed, I can't"

7.YOU BECOME FRUSTRATED WHEN SOMETHING DOESN'T MAKE SENSE OR FOLLOW THE GRAMMATICAL RULES THAT YOU'VE LEARNT.

10. YOU START LEARNING EVERYTHING ABOUT THE COUNTRY THAT SPEAKS THE LANGUAGE

11. YOUR SPOTIFY HAS NOW BECOME FULL OF MUSIC IN YOUR TARGET LANGUAGE

and when you try to play your favorite new songs for your friends, their reactions are like...

or

12. YOU SOMEHOW MANAGED TO LEARN ALL THE BAD WORDS QUICKLY AND WITH AN IMPECCABLE PRONUNCIATION

"I have to learn the bad words first in case someone insults me and I don't understand"

13. IF YOU KNOW A SIMILAR LANGUAGE, YOU CAN'T HELP BUT KEEP MIXING THE TWO UP

14. YOU STRUGGLE SO MUCH WITH ACCENTS, ACCENT PLACEMENT, INTONATION AND PRONUNCIATION

15. WHEN YOU FINALLY MUSTER UP THE COURAGE TO SPEAK TO A NATIVE AND THEY REPLY WITH "WHAT?" OR JUST REPLY IN ENGLISH

16. WHEN A NATIVE PERSON SPEAKS TO YOU AND YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND BUT YOU PRETEND LIKE YOU DO

17. WHEN A NATIVE SPEAKER TELLS YOU THAT YOU HAVE A "CUTE" ACCENT

"Cute means that I don't sound native and I wanna sound native!"

18. WHEN YOU TELL NATIVE SPEAKERS THAT YOU'RE LEARNING AND CAN SPEAK AND UNDERSTAND A LITTLE BUT THEY START HAVING FULL CONVERSATIONS WITH YOU.

19. WHEN YOU'RE BECOMING THAT ANNOYING FRIEND THAT STARTS EVERY SENTENCE WITH.."WELL IN FRANCE THEY DON'T..." OR " ACTUALLY IN ITALY...." OR "AUTHENTIC SPANISH DOESN'T.."
